Babel Buster 485-DS is a minimal configuration LonWorks to Modbus RTU gateway. This version of the original Babel Buster 485 gateway has been specially programmed to be strictly a Modbus slave, and provide raw access to LonWorks network variables without binding or network management. A single 485-DS gateway supports a single LonWorks device. The "network management" stays on the Modbus side.
You will need a copy of the LonMark Resource Files available at www.lonmark.org in order to figure out the content of the various data types you will find in your LonWorks device. You will also need to obtain a copy of the XIF file for your LonWorks device. These are available from the manufacturer of the device, or in many cases (if certified), also on the LonMark web site.
• Universal, raw Modbus access to LonWorks data
• No extra software or drivers to buy
• Raw access to up to 62 LonWorks network variables
• Supports all variable types, including structures and strings
• No binding or network management
• Automatically installs LonWorks device on own network
• Modbus RTU Slave only
• Each variable accessed as 1 to 16 holding registers
• Supports a single LonWorks device mapped to Modbus • Configure by writing Modbus registers
Hardware details are identical to the standard
Babel Buster 485
• LonWorks TP/FT-10 (FTT-10A) to Modbus RS-485 Gateway
• Bidirectional communication between LonWorks and Modbus
• 3150L Neuron® Chip, 48K Flash memory, 10K RAM
• TP/FT-10 (FTT-10A) transceiver
• Powered by 10-30VDC or 12-24VAC 50/60 Hz
• Power Consumption: 0.1A @ 24VDC
• DIN rail mounting, 100mm H x 70mm W x 60mm D
• Modbus standard RJ-45 connector, RS-485 pin-out
• LED indicators for LonWorks & Modbus status
• Pluggable screw terminal block for power & LonWorks network
• Operating temperature -40°C to +85°C
• Humidity 5% to 90%
• FCC Class B
• CE Mark
Note: The BB485-DS supports a maximum of 62 NV's, and the target LonWorks device must be Neuron Chip based. Anything with an NV index higher than 61 in the XIF file is a host based node, and is not supported by the -DS. You need to use the X2 and Modbus TCP to get at the big (host based) LonWorks devices.

| No configuration software or tools needed. Your PLC needs to write one register to select a LonWorks variable mapping for each variable in the LonWorks device. |
The closest you need to get to configuration software is the spread sheet we give you for calculating Modbus register numbers based on LonWorks network variable index. This spread sheet is included in the zip file along with the User Guide (zip).
