Looking for the outputs? The "commandable value" object is a properly behaved BACnet implementation of the Modbus holding register.

The online support package you download right here for free includes product documentation, help pages in browser format, and Windows MS/TP client device configuration tool. To review the help pages, just click the image above. To download, go to the Downloads page.

You can configure Babel Buster 485XM manually by writing to BACnet object properties. The free Windows based configuration tool simplifies the process with a user friendly format. You simply select options from lists. Click the image below to see the tool close up.
Alternate device configuration also available (select software option when ordering):
• 40 Writeable AI
• 10 Commandable AV
• 40 Writeable BI
• 10 Commandable BV

Select option from list when ordering online, or specify "Type 1" on your PO to get the above alternate configuration. Part number for alternate is BB485XM-T1. Default is -T2.

Control Solutions’ Babel Buster 485XM is a fully configurable universal Modbus RTU to BACnet MS/TP gateway. The RTU master is used to make Modbus RTU RS-485 devices accessible on a BACnet network. The Babel Buster 485XM gateway is designed to be economical enough to use multiple gateways, one per device or group of devices, rather than run parallel networks to a larger, more expensive gateway.

The Babel Buster 485XM, an RTU master, can poll multiple Modbus slaves. BACnet data is translated to Modbus register data, and vice versa. Standard BACnet objects are used for mapping Modbus registers. Any BACnet client capable of reading and writing object properties can exchange data with Modbus devices, and configure the gateway. All configuration is done via object properties requiring no special tools. However, to streamline the process, we do offer an optional free Windows MS/TP client configuration tool.

BB485XM Babel Buster 485XM Modbus RTU to BACnet MS/TP Gateway $319.00
How do you map a Modbus register to a BACnet object?

Here we see an example of reading Modbus Holding Register #503 via BACnet Analog Input (AI) object #1.

Using the free configuration tool provided by Control Solutions (download from this web site), you simply need to select register type and format from drop-down lists, fill in register number, choose a slave ID and poll rate, check the Enable Map box, and click the Write button to send this to the Babel Buster 485XM.

The object number shown in the top left corner is the number your BACnet client will use to access this Modbus register. Normally, the AI will read the Modbus register. Setting the AI object to Out of Service will allow you to write to the AI object, which in turn will write to the Modbus holding register. The AV objects go both directions concurrently.

It is not a requirement that you use the Control Solutions configuration tool to configure the Babel Buster 485XM gateway. Any BACnet client capable of writing both standard and manufacturer specific object properties (using only standard BACnet data types) can configure the gateway.
