Control Solutions’ Model ZB25-R is a ZigBee® PRO Router. There are two reasons to use a router in a ZigBee wireless network: (1) Extend range, or increase distance between end points like sensors and the wireless network’s coordinator that acts as the hub. (2) Increase the capacity, or number of end point devices, that are recognized by the coorinator.
The ZigBee coordinator may be found in the Control Solutions ZigBee gateways, such as the BB2-6040 Modbus-ZigBee gateway, or the BB2-7040 BACnet-ZigBee gateway. Without any routers, the coordinator can associate up to 10 end point devices or sensors. To expand the network capacity beyond 10 devices, you need to add one router per every 10 end points. The router is required to be always on, and is therefore not a good candidate for battery power. The ZB25-R is powered by 24V AC or DC, common to building automation systems. The router’s antenna is an internal wire antenna, which is unobstructed by the plastic enclosure. The range possible with ZigBee PRO is advertised as up to one mile “open air line of sight”. The one mile sounds impressive, but you will never have open air line of sight in typical indoor applications. Therefore, the more typical range will be at most a few hundred feet, and not even a few feet if impenetrable walls are located between transmitter and receiver. When trying to pass through difficult walls, the usual practice is to locate a router in a position that allows the signal to “bounce around” the obstruction. SPECIFICATIONS
